South Africans going to Enlgand. What to take with.

When we went to the UK we thought we’d take everything with, just in case. A friend of mine had 9 pairs of shoes. My baggage alone was about 50kg. We took clothes for a year and almost everything we could think of. This was a strange thing to do but inexperienced who knew better?

Clothes in the UK is cheaper than in South Africa. Even leather clothing. I got a Leather jacket in London for a tenth of the price one can find one in South Africa. Technology is cheaper as well. You can pick up a working phone for 10pounds or less.

The point I am making is that when you go to England dont take luggage. Only one bag with a few stuff will do. Maybe a toothbrush etc. But most important take money. Lots of it. Accommodation in England and especially in London is not that cheap but there are places where you can stay for 20 pounds or so a night per person but its best to go prepared.

Motorhomes can still be cheaper than Houses in South Africa

With many people considering to sell their houses and buy motorhomes the motorhome market is rising, even though many camping places might say different. But with rising petrol prices people think that a motorhome would still be more expensive than a house. But I think otherwise. You can always get trailer that carries a small car, like a mini or a buggy that you can drive once you come to your destination. As long as your motorhome stands at a secure and safe place you can leave it at the camping site and drive around in a smaller car.

Many people are also considering biodiesel but I am not sure how a great option that is in South Africa. We just dont have the technology for that yet.

What to look for when buying a Motorhome

Motorhomes can not be found anywhere in South Africa. But those that you can find is not always the best, or most the time they are not even roadworthy. But for those motorhomes you might consider buying you need to check the following:

License:

Not all motorhomes need the same license. Some motorhomes need a “people transport” license like the Unimog. Other motorhomes can vary in License etc.

For instance, two motor homes being the same size might need two different licenses. The one’s engine might be bigger than the other one or the one motorhome might require a special permit.

Toilet:

Well if you are going to be using this motorhome for what the name says there better be a toilet in it. Most 24 ft motorhomes come with toilets but you must just make sure that the toilet is actually working because fixing that small but important part of the motorhome costs a lot.

Off road:

You must also figure out where you will be going with this motorhome. Can it go offroad? Does it have a diff lock? Buying a motorhome that can only take you to places with flat roads can limit your camping and travels. Consider getting a motorhome that can go on and offroad.

Finding the perfect motorhome in South Africa

When looking for a motorhome in South Africa there are certain things to consider. Not all motorhomes are driven with a code 8 license. You might end up buying a motorhome and not being able to drive it due to you license. More and more people are doing the Europe thing with motorhomes in South Africa and taking the road by storm. Houses are becoming way to expensive and the Motorhome idea is alway great. As well as the rich people need a way to get out but they dont all have holiday homes, some get motorhomes.

I will share more tips on motorhomes in South Africa but for now remember today’s tip and dont just get a motorhome without making sure about the license required to drive the motorhome.

3 Things to look for when buying a motorhome in South Africa

When you want to buy a motorhome in South Africa you need to make sure of a few things. Things differ from country to coutnry and you need to know what applies to your country. For instance in South Africa there are many rules and regulations that you must follow when you have a caravan or a motorhome.

I will just share a basic few things that you need to know when deciding on buying a motorhome.

- Engine.

You need to make sure that you get parts for the engine of the motorhome you are wanting to get. You also need to make sure that the engine and the chassis numbers agree with the papers. The engine needs to be in working condition because getting a motorhome to drive when the engine does not work is more than a mission. Some engines are near impossible to fix without the correct tools.

- Headspace.

The most annoying thing about motorhomes is that they dont let you stand up straight. Sure it might not be such a hassle when you are going to check out the motorhome but when you have bought it and live in the motorhome for a month or so you will soon find out just how annoying that is.

- Sleeping space

Try to get a motorhome with as much sleeping space as possible. Its nice to have more sleeping space than you need, especially if you dont know how many people would travel with. Sometimes you might want to take friends and they would not want to sleep outside. Extra sleeping space can also save money on accommodation.

So these are the 3 things I would like to share for now.

Yesterday at Campworld. Not one motorhome

So we went down to Campworld in Somerset West only to find no motorhomes at all. Those motorhomes are scarce in South Africa. But the ones I do find is the old ones which if you pull out all the old stuff and replace it with some of today’s new stuff for Caravans, campers and motorhomes, you will have a mansion on wheels. Motorhomes and the need of them will surely rise in South Africa because houses are becoming so expensive and being able to move around will also be a bonus if there would ever break out war which by the looks of it would not be to far.

Motorhomes are nice but what is even better is a 4×4 Motorhome, yes you do get those. I checked yesterday on gumtree and found two. The only thing with motorhomes are the obvious, you cant drive them to much since they are petrol suckers. So finding a diesel motorhome might even be more worth your search.

Anyway, just wanted to say there are no motorhomes in Somerset West. At least, I could not find one.

Why buying a motorhome in South Africa might be a good idea

Buying a motorhome in South Africa might be a great idea because of the increase in House costs. Think about it. How much do you pay for your house? Do you like your neighbours? Well the thing is, living in a motorhome can be way better than having a house. Now I am not talking about those small motorhomes or those oversized caravans people talk about. I am talking about a real motorhome. Something with enough space for you to actually move around in, and maybe more than one room.

Phoning around and asking how much it is to park your motorhome for a night at almost any camping site in South Africa, you will find out that its around R100 wich is fair for a parking spot, seeing you get water and electricity with it. But this means that at the end of the month you wont be getting that huge water and electricity bill. Buy the time the end of the month comes you have probably payed your motorhome parking spot which means you dont have that.

Think about tax. How much do you pay monthly for your house in tax. That money could of gone for luxuries and upgrading your motorhome or something.

My point is living in a motorhome can be more of a luxury than in a house.

Camping spots and your motorhome. What to look for before you book your camping spot

Traveling in your Motorhome in South Africa can have its downsides but mostly its enjoyable. One downside is when you get to a camping site and you realise that a few things you must have is just not there. So you booked for a week and you cant really stay because of one of these issues:

No electricity

Many camping sites or rather most camping sites have electricity but now and then you get to a camping site that does not have electricity, And if you have a luxury motorhome and want your things to work you better phone the camping site before the time and find out if they have electricity.

Toilet pump dump

Driving for with your motorhome and you get to your camping site, maybe you want to let those toxic things you left behind go out into the sewer but you realize that there is no place you can empty your toilet tanks. Always make sure if you are planning on emptying your toilet tanks that there is a place to do this.

Water

Water is one of the basic things in life you need to survive. But the funny thing is, we have come to a place that has no water. No a tap or anything. Yes, these people did not tell us. So for the most important part of your motorhome trip, make sure you have enough water and if you go to a camping site, just ask. You might sound a bit stupid but its worth the risk.

Franschhoek drive by photoshoot

I really dont know what to call it so sorry if the title gave you a scare. Today we wanted to drive from Somerset West to Stellenbosch to go buy something to eat and to explore Stellenbosch a bit. Even though I have lived here since birth. I still go and explore. So we decided to go up to Jonkershoek but soon the journey went from Jonkershoek to Franschhoek. So we took a turn at some dam just before Franschhoek and only to find out that we cant actually reach the dam. Anyway as we reached Franschhoek we did not feel like climbing out and the place was packed with people. That was when our mission turned to drive around Helderberg, behind the hottentots holland mountains and we came out at Grabouw side over Sir Lowrys pass.

Was much fun. photos coming soon.
