The ANC brand was in trouble the day it was conceived.

I believe that even the ANC, in the naming of the organisation, were victims of apartheid thinking and as a result have never had the strong support they purport to have among Coloureds and Indians.

If you wanted to have a truly inclusive agenda, then it should start with the name of the organisation. Like, for example, the UDF. Coloureds people are only today realising they are actually the descendents of the original "Boesman" (not Bushman) which makes them more African than some of those that claim Africanness as their own. A recent finding near Mossel Bay proves that there were people in the southern part of Africa eons before Shaka chased his friends - now known as the Xhosa - down South.

Indians have always known they were not originally from this country. Hence they still refer to themselves as Indians, despite the fact that not a single inhabitant of Chatsworth was actually born in India.

So when you start an organisation named the AFRICAN national congress but you want to include other ethnic subdivisions and claim to be fighting for their freedom as well.. you need to check yourself.
Many of us support the ANC because of the organisation's ideals and policies, but if given the option of a name change.. it would be done in a heartbeat. Zulus would want something that resonates with them. Xhosas would want something that "reflects African character" (as said by Mcebisi Chandu to us Coloured comrades at a WECSCO meeting inside Gugulethu Comprehensive School in 1989), and Coloureds, Indians and Whites would of course go with English that rolls off the tinge nicely.

And this my friends.. is why Lekota and his band of believers will thrive. They are busy establishing and building on a brand that INCLUDE others from the getgo. That SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS had a very nice ring to it.
