This might be my opinion only but I dont think you really need a compass. In the first place its way easier to see where the sun comes up and where the sun sets. The only time of day you really might need a compass is in the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest.
If you want to find direction look at the sun. The sun always comes up in the east and sets in the west in most parts of the world. You might have some issues when you are in the North or South Pole but for ordinary people if you get lost and want direction, just look at the sun.
