South Africa has an real housing problem. There are more people in ‘informal settlements’ or shacks than in housing because it is to expensive to buy a home. Even if you have a job the least amount you have to pay is extremely expensive. Our salaries in this country out way living cost. So why haven’t the government thought of a short term solution until they have built the new homes. The people strike constantly especially here in the Cape for housing expecting the government to be able to just fabricate it out of thin air. Then I saw these things I thought well look at that you can build a house in a day. It won’t be huge but it’s better than plastic walls and dirt floor! When we drove through Drakensburg there where these round huts that are very similar. And the people seemed happy to live like that and personally I think it looks actually really good.

And there are even an other option of larger one’s than these that are like ‘rondawels’ from camping places here in South Africa. I can remember as an child all the camping places had these round houses with 2 bedrooms open plan living area and full bathrooms and they were actually very spacious and in this day and age with lack of land we cannot be fussy. If I had any say in it I would have built hundreds of ‘rondawels’ rather than the ugly little square boxes they have built. Ok the one in the next video is a big round house but still the potential is there.

Think about it if they combine these things together they can make cost affective homes which would be better in our environment weather wise and more in keeping with the traditional way of building in South Africa. Plus they can even use ‘mud’ and help with the environment

Eco-domes look like the best idea yet. Look at this video it’s perfect I think those houses are so easy to build, cost effective, environmentally friendly and spacious enough for an family.
