Without these four things facebook would not be that popular, this is what makes facebook tick and puts them ahead of other social networks.
1. The profile
Facebook is the only social network that the main focus of the site is the profile, myspace and others put focus on the profile as well and some even has the profile as the home page for a user but one thing they fail in is making it the starting point to the rest of the site. On facebook your profile is the starting point for discovering the rest of facebook. It’s like the central place on the site for each user.
2. The wall
Where other social networks also have walls, guestbooks whatever they might call it, it’s not the same as The wall on facebook. With facebook it’s like your answering machine and your display of how important you really are by everyone writing on your wall. What is the first thing you do when you befriend someone on facebook? You go look at their wall and see who’s writing what, it’s also sort of a status thing. The more friends write on your wall the more popular you seem to be.
3. Applications
Imagine Myspace adding a feature for developers to add their own widgets or applications on the level facebook does. Without those useful but annoying apps facebook would just not be the same. I have tried to use the default facebook now for a couple of weeks, installing no applications but it just does not seem to work when people can for example write on your Funwall when you dont have it installed. So you have to register with Funwall to see what they have added. Very annoying if you ask me. But with the default facebook and no apps installed, facebook wont be that popular.
4. Friends
The most important factor of Facebook is obviously the friends. What would facebook be anyway without friends. The way the friends are organized and integrated within your profile makes it much different than other social networks, although some are catching up and doing the same.
