Guest post - I am white and African

Some people believe that this is not possible. I was born here, I was raised here, I’m raising my children here. I have been to UK ,a first world country, to see what is the fuss is about but I missed my home country to much. South Africa is in my blood its part of my being. Even with all it’s violent crime I don’t want live anywhere else in the world. I am African in every sense. Except my skin. I understand apartheid, I was there too, I was one of those who did not like what I saw, even as a child. Growing up on a farm in the eastern cape my friends were all coloured. They teased me endlessly about my funny surname and light skin. I wasn’t allowed to bring them home to play or take them with to the beach which is very puzzling to me a small child. I thought that would change with the new government. It has, but not the way I thought it would. There is still this stigma that I’m the whitey that took this country and I have no right to be here but why do I have to be punished for something people did that are old and no one cares about anymore or dead. I love this country just as much as a person of colour I want to be seen as an South African not an European invader. I am an African I want to be seen as African.
