Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking-Glass - Movie Trailer

Sunday, November 29, 2009 - 17:27

Alice in Wonderland is a favorite among the Disney productions. Tim Burton has turned it on it's head. Forget everything you have known so far of Alice and the wonderful world she travels to quite by accident because this film does not resemble it in the least. Tim Burton has brought out the darker side of Wonderland as was originally intended by it's writer.

A mistake I also made was thinking it was based on the original Alice in wonderland when in truth it is based on the sequel book Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice found there in 1871 by the very same author Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson) who wrote the original Alice's Adventures in Wonderland more commonly known Alice in Wonderland. His sequel did not become as popular as the first but I believe the story is right for Tim Burton.

There is no reverence to the first Alice and she cannot remember the first trip into wonderland. The story is where Alice travels back into Wonderland ten years later and during winter (the first book was in summer) the main theme is opposites and chess. Alice meets up with some characters from her past Mr Rabbit, Mad Hatter the Red Queen. There are also new characters such as the White Queen.

The trailer does not give away to much which I am grateful for, it has only increased my desire to see Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking-Glass.

Alice is played by Mia Wasikowska a Australian actress. Known for her role as Sophie from In Treatment tv miniseries. Further I do not know much about her except that according looks wise she suits the role as Alice.

Johnny Depp plays the role of the Mad Hatter who apparently has a bigger role in this movie than in all previous Alice movies. Any movie with Johnny Depp in, is worth a look. He tends to bring a dark comedy to most films with a twist of insanity.  This is not the frist time he and Tim Burton works together as Tim Burton made Edward Scissorhands which cemented Johnny in the film industry. I look forward to see what he does with the Mad Hatter.

Helena Bonham makes a fabulous Red Queen which we have met in the previous Alice in Wonderland films, with her wicked famous words 'Of With Her Head!'. Helena is a excellent actress and is also no a new comer to dark comedy, as she has featured in many of Tim Burton's films and has also starred along side Johnny as Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd. She also has the ability to appear quite mad while keeping her composure, almost like a real queen.

Anne Hathaway takes the role of the White Queen. I like Anne and think she is a good actress who also has a quirkiness to her. The White Queen is new to the me so I am not sure what her character needs except she is apparently also mad, who is not in wonderland?

Stephen Fry is the Cheshire Cat, Michael Sheen of all people is playing the White Rabbit. Alan Rickman is the serious and wise Caterpillar. Matt Lucas plays Tweedledee and Tweedledum who suits the role perfectly even though the animation effects makes for disturbing characters.

This is one mad film and is bit on the dark side but that is just as like fairy tales. I am not sure if it is suited to children I rather let my children watch the Disney version of 1951, it is sweet and colorful plus lots and lots of singing. I can assure you that Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland:  Through the Looking-Glass is nothing like it. Release date is 5 March 2010
