EVALUATION SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE. FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES. ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. Is there an ETA on this tsunami for Los Angeles, Newport Beach, and San Diego?

I live in Fiji and we have received the warning LOUD and CLEAR!!! Thanks to VODAFONE..our prayers are also with those praying for us in the pacific and our brothers and sisters from our nearby pacific Islands…

What are your advises the people of Tuvalu should do? Where will we move/shift at this particular time given the fact that we don’t have higher grounds?

Please advise us ASAP…

IN NEED OF HELP ASAP…

Wow you are pretty much stuck there! You should ask your local government or just get to the highest place possible. Since there are really no mountains you dont seem to have a lot of options. Just hope the wave is not that big I guess.

like does anyone know the eta of the wave

in southern cali? is there like some beach report? hope all is well with my peeps out there, stay frosty people..beach dude out 4 now….

I live about 45 mins away from mazatlan… are we saved. or should we go further?? or higher.. idk. what can we do??

If you are talking about Mazatian in Mexico I personally think you are pretty safe. Just get as high as possible anyway.

What is the projection of wave height (tsunami) when it hits Kosrae in the Federated States of Micronesia? We have a small store about 100 yards or so from the waters edge.

lets pray for everyones safety ..

i live in Peru like 2 hours from Chimbote is there any chances that a tsunami will come here?

Hola, i live in Cabo San Lucas Mexico….we only have been warned not to go near or on beach (shore) ….just listening to news and waiting for further instruction. How should we prepare¿¿¿ what should we do in a tsunami warning¿¿ i don´t want to wait to last minute. Does anyone know expected time of it¿¿¿ thanks. God Bless us all! My prayers and blessing go out to all in need of it right now.

If you are still waiting for the tsunami in your area and are not sure of what to do..the wave heights are varying depending on where you are. French Polenysia has been hit by waves up to 6 feet.

Hawaii is expecting waves anywhere from 3 feet to 9 feet. The water is starting to receed there now. The further away from Chile where the earthquake happend the later the waves will hit.

If you live near the beach or low lying areas, get to higher ground immediately. If you live in an area where it’s mainly flatland..go further inland away from the beaches and shorelines..go to a tall building of at least 7 floors, many public buildings like hotels or shelters will allow you to go there.

Stay in your protective area until your local authorties say it’s all clear. If you have not had a wave within 2 hours of the expected time of hitting..it’s very possible the threat has passed.

Stay safe if you are still waiting for the waves.

is the marshall islands going to experience anything harsh?

Bonjour,

Merci

Hello,

I’m French, my brother has gone live a year in New Caldedonie in Noumea.

I worry for this newsletter.

New Caledonia is listed, what does that mean?

A significant risk of tsunami risk of this happening?

Thank you

I live in the Cook Islands and had been so scared with the warnings. Although it won’t hit us (Well some high stated people here think so) i still go to higher grounds. And the early hours calls from the Police was very helpful (even though non of us picked up their call but we manged to answer the second call which was from one of our famiy member), they even came around our beach houses to warn us. Check out this link http://www.cinews.co.ck/2010/March/Wed10/features.htm#1003060802 the story of ‘Tsunami panic is not necessary’……(????) Well, personally – for me, no matter what the warning is, i still go to higher grounds (cos we can’t fight mother nature) and we don’t know what could have happened. Better than saying sorry later. Cheers for the help. Cooks
