With the many newspapers in South Africa thats switching over to paid subscriptions and with the internet becoming the major news source its harder for newspapers to survive. The Weekender has come to a end, not only the newspaper but looks like the website has come to a end as well.
The final post on the weekender reads:
"The board of BDFM Publishers has decided, with regret, to cease publishing The Weekender newspaper, due to what it feels are insurmountable financial difficulties occasioned by the ongoing economic crisis in South Africa and the rest of the world. The final edition will appear tomorrow, Saturday, November 7.
The board wishes to thank The Weekender's readers, advertisers and staff for the faith they have shown in the newspaper since it was launched in March 2006. It rapidly and deservedly developed a reputation as the best weekend read in the country.
Unfortunately the recession lengthened the financial breakeven point to a dangerous extent and the board felt that its first duty was to protect BDFM's established core products, Business Day, the Financial Mail and Summit Television."
