No power for the people

South Africa has been thrown into darkness in resent years. very literally. we were the proud country to have the first electric street light in Kimberly. How did we come to this? I am all for black empowerment and equality to people but they have really screwed up this one. South Africa was a leader in electricity technology before 1994. The change did not occur immediately but gradually we fell behind they retrenched all the competent people before they had a chance to train up the new staff witch i believe was their first mistake. The second big mistake was there was no competition they didn't have to work at it the people had no choice but use Eskom.

The fact that the only power supplier in the country is a government owned enterprise is definitely a major problem. A further problem is that Eskom warned the government about the pending problem about ten years ago. The government chose to ignore these warnings.
The old saying that says 'let bygones be bygones' is most probably of relevance here. It will serve no purpose to try and find a culprit, we need to find solutions right now. It does seem as if the government and Eskom are working hard at it right now (albeit too late). Hopefully a long-term solution will be found soon.
All I know is that the days of assuming that when we throw a light switch there will be light, is gone, and will be gone for a long time. We all will have to adapt to the situation as it now stands. This whole debacle has brought new meaning to the term 'power to the people'.
