Internet to Rupert Murdoch - Stop complaining

Wednesday, December 2, 2009 - 10:48

Rupert Murdoch the Fox News owner and complainer wants to make it hard for other news sites to get traffic by calling news aggregators "plagarism". He probably meant Google News as well. Well most small and emerging news sites needs Google News as both a starting point and a place to get their foot in the news industry.

Rupert Murdoch wants sites like Google News to pay those that they get the news from. This is both wrong and against open and free news. If Rupert Murdoch cant handle the way things work on the internet he should just get off the internet instead of trying to bend the rules his way and thereby destroying smaller news sites.

There was a FTC workshop meeting yesterday where Rupert Murdoch attended:

The Federal Trade Commission will hold a two-day workshop to explore how the Internet has affected journalism, with representatives from print, online, broadcast, and cable news organizations; academics; consumer advocates; bloggers; and others involved in new media. Participants include the Honorable Henry A. Waxman, Chairman, House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corp., Arianna Huffington, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Huffington Post, and Aneesh Chopra, Assistant to the President, Associate Director and Chief Technology Officer for the Office of Science and Technology of the Executive Office of the President of the United States.

He was at a FTC meeting and if you dont know what the FTC does here it is:

The FTC's mission is to protect consumers from fraudulent or deceptive claims that mislead consumers, and from harmful business practices that undermine the competitive process. The work of each of the agency's three Bureaus is unified behind this mission, and the Office of Policy Planning articulates the policy goals that support that mission.

Rupert Murdoch is against sites like Google News that is in the best interest of smaller sized news sites, if not for Google News these sites would not be able to grow. Rupert Murdoch goes further to harm the internet and consumers by not accepting the way things are and just removing his site from Google News, he wants to change the way things work and they work pretty ok at the moment.

The question behind the FTC workshop was "how will journalism survive the internet age"? Well the answer I'd like to give to that is just fine if people like Rupert Murdoch stays away from it. So Rupert Murdoch, please stop complaining, if you really dont want Google News to aggregate your site then simply remove your sites. It really is that easy.
