Living in South Africa with Zuma as president

Monday, April 27, 2009 - 00:18

Tonight for the second time I have read an article about Jacob Zuma written by a non South African. I am still  in shock. Living in South Africa you get used to how things work. Seeing idiots run the country so when someone spells it out so clearly what mess is really running the show. It's like this feeling of people see outside what is going on, I am not a racist for thinking badly of our 'leaders'. Knowing everything I know about what could happen at any moment and having to live in fear for my children's safety on a daily basis has made me numb to it all. At some point you just have to go on with living day to day. My only goal has become to keep my children safe and to think of a way out of this. I have left a comment after the post which I copied, here it is if you want to read it.

Every person I know has voted and not one of them for the ANC. Fortunately that means the Western Cape is in safe hands sort of, there is only so much the DA can do. I despair for the country I once knew and which is long gone. You have to hawk over your children constantly and my husband won't let me drive on my own. Living in fear that the black population will decide they want your house and they don't care if you have to die to get it. Both my brothers are in other countries but I cannot leave because my husband and children have only South African passports. It has turned into a waiting game, when will we become another Zimbabwe??

After seeing how upset the English was I thought I had to let them know we know what is going on. I brought up Zimbabwe, my mother was born in Zimbabwe she lived there until she was 10, I think. My great grandfather bought a farm there, he grew up in District 6 somewhere, not from a 'mighty' farm heritage he worked for every cent he ever owned. His heritage was stolen by ignorant people who thought it was just another rich white farmer. My mothers cousin who ran the farm was held hostage for 3 days in the farmhouse toilet with his wife and 2 children. The people who suffered the most was the farmhands who protected them, most was beaten and their houses burnt. I have no desire to wake up to that particular nightmare. It frightens me to think that it could happen. I don't want to seem unpatriotic, I love South Africa but it is not the same place anymore and we should all face it.

Living in South Africa with Zuma as President

Hi, Daizy

I remember before the 1994 there was similar speculation about the "swart gevaar" that will rule South Africa. Many people started panicking and started stocking up on candles, tin foods, flour, etc and some of these people even went as far as emigrating. Nothing since that time happened. The ANC govern this country since then and you have not been evicted from your house as was stated.

I happen to be from the Western Cape. I was born in District six and were forcibly removed from that area to the Cape Flats - Hanover Park. We grew up under Apartheid with all the disadvantages that came with it. We grew up believing that the white person is better than us. We always lived in fear because of overcrowding, drugs, poverty, lack of resources, etc came gangsterism. How do you as a white think did our children survive from day to day not knowing from which direction the bullet is coming. But what did the whites do. Ignore us and thought nothing of our lives. White police will come to the area and did nothing to stop this violence on the Cape Flats and in the Townships. They rather enlist themselves on the payroll of the gang leaders. Is this not what you called corruption?? I don't think that you want to be reminded about the previous white government that South Africa had. As a white with your thinking you are thinking that crime only started in this country now, you are thinking that corruption only started now. What about all those previous wthite ministers in the NP government that robbed our people of their social grants - is this not corruption?? What about Magnus Malan that thought nothing of killing out children during the Apartheid era.

An for your information, South Africa will not become another Zimbabwe. Even though the ANC will rule this country forever, the president of the country will always change because he/she will not serve longer than two terms. Or do you think that we as black do not have the same intelligence that whites have. With the ANC in goverment, the economcy were strenghten, more blacks have access to education, more people have housing, water, electricity, etc.

On crime - why should only black be accused of committing crime?? Look around you, look at skierlik - it was a white person killing innocent children. Look at the Barbie story in Pretoria - was this advocate and partner not whites who raped innocent children. What about Glen Agliotti who try to import drugs - is he not white. Or is your thinking that only blacks commit suicide.

As for the Western Cape - like mentioned before - our people are scared of change. They have been brought up believing only the white man can rule this country. I hope that they too will come to their senses because the majority of these people happen to be coloureds. They will see the light at the end of the tunnel soon. Because people thinking like you would not mind happening a white Western Cape.

I think you should wake up and smell the coffee. You have to admit that you are racist. You should not blame blacks for all the wrongdoings in South Africa. It happened in the Apartheid era but just because you were cushioned by the luxurious life for whites you failed or ignore to see it.

A lot has been improved by the ANC-led government. Unlike with the Apartheid government - we can find jobs, we can stay wherever we want to, we can go to school in whatever area. People like you cannot expect that the ANC-led government in their 15 years of governance to perform miracles overnight. They deserve a chance and don't need people like you with negative attitude. You will not see the difference but the poor people on the ground can see it.

Get off your high horse, daizy. The ANC is here to stay

.

I can continue but it will take me days to write about all the wrondoings of the NP-led government

I typed a long reply

I typed a long reply reminding you of the fact that my great grandfather came out of district 6 and that his daughter was shunned form ng church because of her 'dark' complection. But firefox crashed and I'm typing this instead.
Remember it wasn't only the coloreds and the blacks who where disadvantaged. That is what everyone seemingly forgot. I grew up dirt poor while the extended family had farms because my dad was an macanic and he worked hard for what he had. He has become a plant manager of a major company, getting his decree at 40 years of age and they still called it race discrimination because he is white, bullshit. He grew up on the wrong side of the tracks Italian immigrant for a dad and english mother. Remember the apartheid did not like immigrants, what's worse he was a prisoner of war. So don't give me that crap about because 'I had a cushy life'. My life was not cushy we never starved but we where definitely in the poorer class.
I have never owned designer clothing. The first time I went to a hairstylist I was 17 years old, and I used my matric dress's money. So the you can just shove the ANC and their pre conceptions about people. That is whats ruining this country. I have never been helped by ANY government. Not the apartheid regime and definitely not this one. This one has made things so bad that people who worked on the farms that my uncle lost, still visit my mom. One of them works for us now that my parents have money.
I have not once claimed that the Apartheid was a good government I have written about what I am experiencing now.
I am not on a high horse you must be high to think so.
Anonymous I am sorry you had a hard life but just because someone is white does not mean they did not too have just as hard time. My family is all the proof I need that it is not where you come from that matters but what you do about it that does. And that is a lesson the ANC has not learned, until people move on from past hurts they would not be able to see the future. And Anonymous the future is not looking very bright from my point of view.
