These pots are sold everywhere in South Africa and you can pick them up for as little as R60 from Checkers or most shops that sell braai equipment. They are quite heavy but really worth the money.

The reason for this is they last years. Whether you just want to go away camping or need to stay in the wilderness for years this is the pot you need to take with.

These pots are called bush babies if I am correct. They are made of cast iron and will probably be the most heavy thing in your survival kit or bug out vehicle or bag.

Some stainless steel pots are not nearly as thick as they should be and soon after some fires they just break and get holes. These dont. Even after years of use they last. Really worth it.

Cooking Pot for bushcraft. August 18th, 2008

When you go live in the bush for unkown lengths of time you need something that endures, some thing that wont break 1 month from starting to use it. They sell these pots in South Africa also known as a "potjiekos" pot. Its made of cast iron and weights quite a bit but its worth carrying and using when staying for long periods in the wilderness.

A lot of times fire destroys the pots real quick. But these pots can be used for many years, even generations and can be bought for about $7 or R60 and is really worth the money.

I dont know if you use google earth but I sure do. I recently noticed that some if not most parts of South Africa has been updated. Previously the images used on Google Earth for parts of Cape Town was about 4 years old. The new ones are a bit more recent and here in the Helderberg the images shows the fire close to the Mall that happened December or a bit earlier I think.

Its great looking at the new stuff, the quality is way better than the old cache although some parts are still a bit blury.

If you are not using Google Earth you should check it out.

If you are stuck in the wild you need to plan for ways to get out. One of the most frustrating things is when someone is stuck in the jungle is when they see a airplane or a helicopter but they cant signal for help.

You should have a fire reader or at least a way to make a fire incase you hear oncoming airplanes or helicopters.

The best place is on a hill or a place with no trees. If its in the middle of nowhere and there are usually no people they will notice smoke, but you have to get their attention.

Here’s how.

Wet wood. That’s it. Throw wet wood on a fire and it will smoke. Leaves also works. If you cant find any leaves or wet wood, use live plants and if you cant find a plant throw in your some of your clothes.

But the answer is wet wood works the best to make smoke.

Axes are used to chop wood, generally. But in a survival situation you need a axe.

For protection

A axe can be used for protection when you are attacked by wild animals other creatures.

Stuck

A axe can be used if you are stuck. A axe can get you out of many situations where you might get stuck and its much stronger than a knife so it can bash through rocks if you really need to.

Chopping fire wood.

Obviously you need a fire and what’s better than a really big fire in a survival situation, except when there is war or you are being chased my people.

Climbing.

A axe can also be used to help you climb, you might find it hard than with a normal climbing axe but if you need to make foot holes its easier to do it with axe than with something else.

Bushcraft

Anyone living in the bush must have a axe. Its just one of those things that you cant go without.

Mussels August 11th, 2008

I dont have a picture at the moment but I am sure you can find one my searching for mussels.

Mussels is a great source of :

Selenium, Vitamin b12 and Zinc as well as Folate.

Mussels can be cooked in its shell on a open fire and is some of the best survival food if you are close to a beach or stranded on a island.

Mussels are small but well worth the effort to get them. They are usually stuck on rocks and usually not that deep to get a few to eat.

Mussels have been a great source of food for years and in France its eating with fries as here in South Africa we eat it usually with other sea food.

Yes, South Africa is the land of the free, the free criminals that is. While the government sits with their fat asses and decides who’s the next president and what they can screw up next the robbers take their loot.

A 55 year old Potgietersrus farmer was shot because he was on a public road.

Piet de la Rey was hit twice by shots fired from a car of armed robbers, who had tried to blow up a Fidelity Security Services armoured vehicle transporting cash to Kimberley. The incident happened about 20km from Petrusberg and led to a traffic standstill for several kilometres. The road was closed by emergency personnel for most of the day and traffic was re-routed.

Now that’s some messed up stuff.

Many survival experts will tell you this is not needed but this is something I prefer. I dont have two fixed blade survival knives. The two survival knives I am talking about are a fixed blade knife and a swiss army knife.

The reason I have two survival knives is because the one can do what the other one cant. Not just that if you use specific tools what they were made for you can use these tools for longer because they will last longer.

For instance, my swiss army knife has a saw that works pretty good. Whereas if I use the single fixed blade knife for sawing down a tree I might make the life time of the fixed blade knife shorter. Another thing about the swiss army knife is the other tools it has. You can make a fire with the magnifying glass, you can measure things with the ruler and you can take out splinters with the tweezers. While the fixed single blade knife is stronger and made for more specific things.

So that is the reason I use two survival knives. Its really worth the extra weight on your belt.

This is part of the road trip series

The day after staying awake for two days and we had some sleep we went around to the Colesberg information centre. I was surprised to see that this information centre was much more than just a information centre. They are preparing the Colesberg information centre to be much more than just a information centre.

They people that work there are quite friendly and they gave me a preview of how it looked. I did not want to push my luck and take to much photos but I will share them in the next posts.

On the outside of the Colesberg is this memorial or stone. It says:

14 (Cole’s Kop) Battery Royal Artillery

This memorial is in remembrance of the bravery and resourcefulness of the 14th (Cole’s Kop) Battery Royal Artillery who, in January 1900 as 4th Battery Royal Field Artillery, conducted operations in the area of Colesberg, Cole’s Kop, the 800ft flat - topped hill overlooking the Boer positions, gave an ideal vantage point to the British forces.

Assisted by the Royal Engineers and the Essex Regiment, a 15 pounder was borne to the summit and brought into action. At dawn on 12 January 1900 the solitary gun opened fire causing confusion and forcing a withdrawal of the opposition out of range. A second gun was subsequently taken to the top. In all 3383 rounds were fired between 6 Jan and 12 Feb 1900.

Major Butcher, the Battery commander, was awarded the distinguished service order.

In 1928 14 Battery Commander, was granted the Honour Title COLE’S KOP which retains to this day.
