Saving money is easier than you might think

October 7, 2008 by evl

Learning how to do things differently and becoming more eco friendly will actually help you save money. I might sound like a hippy now but if you think about it: Using natural resources Collecting food Not using chemicals etc I guess all these things might make a blog about money sound totally irrelevant but lets look closer it might sound more like a health blog or something about survival. Using natural resources Everyone needs time away from work, wheter you are a rocket scientist or a banker and the best way to start saving money is by making your own garden if you have that space. Some vegatables can grow within 1 or 2 weeks and before you know it you've saved a couple bucks. Collecting food You need excersize and hobbies, what better way than fishing or collecting things in nature that is edible. Nature is where all food comes from so why not take or make the time to go and collect things to eat. Here where we live we are fairly close to the mountain. It makes great excersize and the berries, fruit and other things you can put in your basket is plentyfull. Simple things can make you save a lot of money.

Disconnected again. What are my options? Telkom sucks, twitterfox works offline

Yes yes I know twitterfox can not possibly work offline but somehow its the only thing that seems to work with my connection at the moment. Nothing loads, only twitterfox. Must be the port no or something not entirely sure why twitterfox would work while i have no internet connection.

Anyway, in South Africa i am not sure one can successfully run a business or blog online without being interrupted all the time. For the past week we've had a slow connection and I am now fed up with it.

Our ISP was friendly enough to let us pay the old price and keep the package but being disconnected all the time it does not seem like such a great idea anymore.

I need to be connected since my entire career is online, if there is no internet i have no job. That sucks. I guess I am just ranting now while being offline but thanks to this dumb communication system and laws we have in South Africa I can not be as successful as i really could be.

The rude part of social networking

August 25, 2008 by evl

I have worked in London restaurants and I was probably the rudest person ever to be a waiter but I made more money than most other waiters. I could not understand this until now. If you know me you would know that I dont take crap but am a very friendly person.

But in social networking, especially in South Africa there are some vain bloggers and people that call themselves social marketers and social media strategist. The thing is that these people think they rule the internet when in fact they are very small.

That is where I learned to become a mean person again and what it did shocked me.

The more rude and tough you are, the more you talk about yourself the more people want your approvement and that leads to traffic and fame. Weird isnt it.

Think about these cocky bloggers that act like they know it all. They have people reading their sites, while the friendly ones barely can make a living.

Colesberg Information centre

July 28, 2008 by evl

This is part of the road trip series

The day after staying awake for two days and we had some sleep we went around to the Colesberg information centre. I was surprised to see that this information centre was much more than just a information centre. They are preparing the Colesberg information centre to be much more than just a information centre.

They people that work there are quite friendly and they gave me a preview of how it looked. I did not want to push my luck and take to much photos but I will share them in the next posts.

On the outside of the Colesberg is this memorial or stone. It says:

14 (Cole's Kop) Battery Royal Artillery

This memorial is in remembrance of the bravery and resourcefulness of the 14th (Cole's Kop) Battery Royal Artillery who, in January 1900 as 4th Battery Royal Field Artillery, conducted operations in the area of Colesberg, Cole's Kop, the 800ft flat - topped hill overlooking the Boer positions, gave an ideal vantage point to the British forces.

Assisted by the Royal Engineers and the Essex Regiment, a 15 pounder was borne to the summit and brought into action. At dawn on 12 January 1900 the solitary gun opened fire causing confusion and forcing a withdrawal of the opposition out of range. A second gun was subsequently taken to the top. In all 3383 rounds were fired between 6 Jan and 12 Feb 1900.

Major Butcher, the Battery commander, was awarded the distinguished service order.

In 1928 14 Battery Commander, was granted the Honour Title COLE'S KOP which retains to this day.

4 Matches makes a score. Title, post, tag, meta data

May 6, 2008 by evl

When blogging and you want to be listed for certain keywords on search engines there are a few things you need to consider. Search engine optimization can make or break a blog. Especially if you have been blogging for a while now but you dont see the results from search engines. I recently doubled my search engine traffic by following a few certain blogging rules and some blog tweaks. Today I will try to explain one of those tricks for you. There are 4 things that make a blog post become more search engine worthy. But those four things should match. That is the title, the tags, the meta data and the post itself. The first thing search engines looks for is the Title. The title is the most important words in your blog post. The goal of the title is to try and get the best possible keyword combination that looks attractive for humans and that has the relevant keywords that you will use throughout your blog as well as those you really want that post to be listed for one search engines. The second thing search engines looks for is the Meta Data or those things hidden from the human eye. The Meta data should contain all the words that the human eye can see and is visible to people reading your blog. If you use the same words here as in your title, your chances have now double for being found for that particular word on search engines. The next thing would be tags. A lot of times we post something funny for example. But the word funny is not in there although it really is funny. And then we tag it funny. But that will get you bad marked on search engines because you are tagging your post with words that do not exist in the post or title. There is something such as over search engine optimization and this is it. You should be able to match every tag in your post or title with your tags of that current blog post. The fourth thing is the Post itself. Using your keyword to much can also cause you to now be found for that keyword on search engines. Using the keywords about 4 times per 250 words is recommended. The longer the post the obvious more tags you can have and the more you can use your keywords you want to be found for on search engines. The post is the second most important thing after your title and this is ultimately what your blog is about. The posts. So making your post search engine friendly but also reader friendly is the goal. You see how your certain keyword should now be in the post, the title, the meta data, and the tags. This will increase your chances of being found for the keywords your are using. That's how I doubled my traffic. If you enjoyed this post please give it a sphinn or a stumble. Thanks.

Kleinmond Lagoon, bridge and beach landscape photograph

May 1, 2008 by evl

Kleinmond used to be a big holiday destination and it probably still is. With Accommodation right on the beach as you can see in this photo in the background, there used to be a camping site I dont know if it still is there. We used to camp there when it was still safe to camp in South Africa. Now days people just go to guest houses. Kleinmond has a lot of restaurants and great places to eat. There is a Spar and also a "Friendly" store. At hight tide the water comes over the beach and fills the lagoon with new water. There also used to be a place where you can rent boats to go on the lagoon but I dont know if it still is there.

If you want friends be friendly

April 29, 2008 by evl

Have you ever read someone talking about blogging friends? How does one make these friends? I have to agree being friends with someone you have never even seen does sound a bit weird but a lot of people that are blogging friends and have great impact on each other's lives, most of them sometimes dont even know how the other person looks. That is the great thing of blogging. You make friends and they stick with you and help your blog grow. The thing is you cant just sit around and wait for these blogging friends. No one will just come up to your blog and start being your friend. You have to give into other bloggers lives and blogs before you can make these type of blogging friends. The point? If you want other people to help you grow your blog you first have to help them.
