This might not be good news or knew news but my dad gets this Crime Alert thing once a month from Helderberg Crime Watch. We live in Somerset West so this is our local Community Policing. I am going to repeat what the report says.
We are experiencing an increase in robberies, including armed robberies, recently being the attack on a residential home in Runkel Street, Steynrust. The husband and wife was accosted in their house, in the ensuing skirmish the husband was shot twice and survived the attack. The perpetrators fled on foot to a waiting vehicle. Incidents like this are on the increase.
We have also noticed and increase in persons trespassing on premises. Please report these persons. They are the eyes and ears for the future attacks on you and your family or any other soft targets. They could be the 'tip off' source to your house being burgled. If we can eliminate most of the crime. Call the patrol vehicle to report these people or call the patrol vehicle to escort you into your house. Don't fall pray and become a statistic. 'YOU COULD BE NEXT'
Housebreakings have increased. Plasma and LCD TV's, as well as laptops are targeted. These items are sold easily and there is a flourishing market for these goods. Get to know your neighbour. Tell him/her when you will be away from your property for an extended period. Check your alarm and set it at night. Do not act foolish and think it cannot happen to me. Act now and deter crime.
Credit card theft and skimming is also on the increase. Do not let your credit card or debit card out of your sight. It takes a second to Duplicate and you could lose your bank balance.
Helderberg Crime Watch telephone number is 021 852 3118. They are trying to do something about our crime situation. Most of us living in this country cannot leave or does not want to leave. Everything is here, if it was not for the crime it would be paradise on earth, really. I love South Africa I was born in Somerset West actually I am a third generation to have grown up right here in this town. But the crime is increasing at such an alarming rate if I had the chance to live somewhere safer I would move tomorrow.
I dont know how they knew the robbers were nigerian, maybe they are not allowed to say black so they just call them nigerians. Whatever the point, Millers clothing store in the once peaceful town of Strand in Helderberg was robbed by 5 armed nigerian armed gunmen in broad daylight.
I was driving down to the beach and saw the roads closed and thought it was all about the storms, only when i spoke to my parents they told me that there was a armed robbery.
This is about the 4th time that same street or exact location has been hit by a gang of armed robbers.
The fires are now coming closer to Erinvale. Check out the photos of the fire in Somerset West
I dont think the fires in the Helderberg area were started on purpose. There has been a fire now for 15 days but people only count it as 5 days. A fire like that can have coals for days and if the wind picks up again those coals get strength again and the fire starts from the beginning. That's normally how a fire can get a second breath.
But as usually you see the news media raging with anger about some arsonist that I dont think exists.
If you want to blame someone blame the South African government
The fire here in Somerset West and Sir Lowry's pass caused massive smoke to go all over Helderberg, even reaching as far as Cape Town. A few people has been treated for inhaling to much smoke.
Yesterday there was white ash raining down on the entire Helderberg.

The fire reached the mountain this afternoon and it was going up the mountain to the signal tower, if the fire reaches that tower most of Cape Town will be without cellphone signal or radio signal

False Bay is beautiful, one of the best sunsets in the world but also one of the best places in the world for random photography. In this photo we have most of Helderberg and in the distance there you can actually see the mountains of Paarl as well as the mountains of Stellenbosch. Amazing views.
False Bay is also a great place for canoeing but you have to know that there are sharks here and that guy in the photograph has a bit of guts to go that deep.
Maybe I'm just to afraid of sharks.

You get this type of view by going up to the viewpoint at the old Steenbras dam entrance. The entrance has now closed but you can still drive up to it and get the most amazing views and photos of Cape Town.
Here we have Table Mountain in the distance over the False Bay waters.
This is one nice photo of Gordons Bay and Somerset West. Not a lot you get a picture with both of them looking so clear. In the front you can see here the new harbour or harbour island while at the back you can see the shacks and parts of Somerset West as well as the hill close to Radloff park in Somerset West

Strand beach usually is full. This year around it was not that full, although the taxi and buses streamed to Helderberg there were not that many tourists in Cape Town this summer. In fact I think most people are afraid of the crime.
The tourism for whoever gives the details from government said last year there were 2million visitors to South Africa when in fact only 200 000 or a bit more came from other countries than Africa. The rest were all refugees going under the holiday visa looking for a better life.
