This car is sinking, Strand, South Africa

So we have another cold front here. Man I wish summer was here already. Anyway this photograph was taken the other day when the entire Helderberg was covered with water during the Cape Town storm. Just think, that is salt water. Going to be a mission cleaning that car.

We drove obviously through the water as well and had issues all week with the breaks. The water went right up the bricks into some shops.

How to lose a customer

September 14, 2008 by evl

The other day I went to a certain computer store in Somerset Mall where I planned to buy a iMac computer. As I marched into the store I was swarmed with sales men trying to convince me to buy the iMac. The thing is I had already decide to buy the iMac but I listened anyway what they had to say. The previous day another guy helped me and also explained to me what the benefits are of using a iMac above a normal computer. Before he spoke to me I was convinced I needed a iMac already but as usual I wanted to hear what he had to say. So now there are two sales people thinking they have convinced me to buy the iMac. When I finally bought the thing I had the sales person draw me into the corner to tell me that it was his sale after all, he introduced me to the iMac. Seeing the bitching and moaning of his fellow workers I could smell there was a big fight behind the scenes about who gets the commission. So here is what they did and how I saw it in simple terms with a bit of repeating myself: I walk into the shop, straight to the Macs, knowing that they cost the same there as in the Apple Mac store in Cape Town , decided to buy one. Not 5 minutes goes by and I am involved in the salesmen politics of who sold the iMac to me and who gets the cash. After standing there for a few minutes, seeing sales people having a barney about who's it is, they take me in a corner and try to convince me who it was the made me buy the iMac. Finally I get to pay for the iMac and the fighting continues, also by this time there is a very tense atmosphere as big as the shop is I could feel it. So I just wanted to get out of there and not go back again after feeling like a piece of meat in the middle of a lion hunt. If you train your salesmen, train them to make the sale and split the dough if they have to. If they have not done the entire deal train them to sort it out behind the curtains, where no one can see. I have spent over R50k in the last view years at that shop and they wont see me again if I can help it. They have successfully lost a client.

Dear Packard Bell your round one button mouse pad is a crap idea.

September 10, 2008 by evl

So i got a Packard Bell laptop. When I was looking at it in the shop i did not think much of the round circle keyboard with the one button that you can click left and right. But working with it seems near impossible. The scrolling sucks so bad you have to plug in a usb mouse. Quickly browsing sites becomes more of a chore and if you have to scroll down you bet your attention wont be on the site. It will be on the mousepad or touchpad trying to figure out where the heck to scroll with the thing. So dear Packard Bell if you want to make your laptops look like Apple at least make sure the stuff works before you actually sell it. To the buyer: if you see a laptop with a round touchpad, make sure the thing works easily.

Lonely Surfer on the wide open seas of False Bay

While the shops was being bashed by the massive Cape Storm the seas were full of joyful surfers that just could not believe their what their eyes were seeing. The waves were massive and any surfer's dream. Here you can see a lonely surfer facing some waves in the Strand.

The perfect survival cooking pot or for bushcraft

August 22, 2008 by evl

These pots are sold everywhere in South Africa and you can pick them up for as little as R60 from Checkers or most shops that sell braai equipment. They are quite heavy but really worth the money.

The reason for this is they last years. Whether you just want to go away camping or need to stay in the wilderness for years this is the pot you need to take with.

These pots are called bush babies if I am correct. They are made of cast iron and will probably be the most heavy thing in your survival kit or bug out vehicle or bag.

Some stainless steel pots are not nearly as thick as they should be and soon after some fires they just break and get holes. These dont. Even after years of use they last. Really worth it.
