Have you ever used your survival gear?

December 24, 2008 by evl

The other day I got myself some flint and steal. You know you strike the flint against the steal and the small pieces that fall off are heated, they light the tinder which then in turn lights the fire which gives you a real great fuzzy feeling because you did not use any modern form of lighting the fire. Well, to my surprise I found that I had never used a flint and it was harder than I thought. You see you have to strike the flint a certain way to light the fire. It really is not as easy as it looks. This will teach us a lesson. Many people gather equipment for they might need it one day and even though they have the equipment they have no idea how to use it. If you dont know how to use your survival gear it really is not worth the extra weight, especially in real survival situations. Learn to use your gear so you dont get stuck with something you dont know how to use as well as carrying the extra weight.

Where to watch and find breaking news online - For news junkies

December 18, 2008 by evl

I am a real news junkie. I dont know why but its like an addiction. I want to know things before the rest of the world knows them Also running a blog I can blog about things before others blog about it. Its just plain addictive. So here are a few places to get stuck on looking for breaking news. Some you know, some you might not. Some are obvious. Lets explore: Google News Google News is probably a crowd favorite and I can understand why. Instead of just showing one news source it shows the collective topic all the news sites are talking about. So instead of just finding one breaking news story, you'll find that breaking news story showing all the sites that write about it. One thing worth it is to customize your news on Google News. Personally I dont like sport so i removed it. screen-capture.png Newsvine Newsvine is like a news community where you can vote on news and share news. Its basically as I said a news community. This is worth checking out although if you are not living in the US you might not enjoy it that much since it mostly focussed on US stories. screen-capture-1.png Twitter Twitter can be a great source to find breaking news. Oddly most people that have breaking news usually use the words "breaking news" For instance doing a search on search.twitter.com and searching for "breaking news" will give you many results and mostly when bloggers and tweeters break the news, it's before the news channels and papers. screen-capture-2.png Addict-o-matic (addictomatic.com) This is a different type of way to find the news. This will not really show you all the breaking news from random topics but will enable you to find news about a specific topic. By choosing your sources and typing in your wanted word you want news for it enables you to find news or articles from various places. Although you can find breaking news here about a topic you might also find things that are a bit older. screen-capture-3.pngscreen-capture-4.png screen-capture-5.png screen-capture-6.png

Telkom claims they answer support calls within 20 seconds

October 5, 2008 by evl

Our messed up communication dick tator here in South Africa called Telkom claims to answer support calls within 20 seconds of you phoning in. Now we'd like to put this to the test but thankfully we dont use ADSL or Telkom on our part. our ISP uses Telkom. But after the claim many people have phoned in and tested the system and have waited up to 20minutes listing to a recored voice sounding like a broken record that got stuck somewhere in the stoneage, when they finally pick up the phone you are greeted by a person that barely speaks English although you selected english. Dont know if they still do the English or language choice but from what I figure you might as well select any language because they wont understand you neither will you understand them. The fact is IVY our so called miscommunication minister should be fired. Telkom should close down and we should get real internet and phone services.

5 reasons you should put a axe in your survival gear or bug out bag.

October 1, 2008 by evl

Axes are used to chop wood, generally. But in a survival situation you need a axe. For protection A axe can be used for protection when you are attacked by wild animals other creatures. Stuck A axe can be used if you are stuck. A axe can get you out of many situations where you might get stuck and its much stronger than a knife so it can bash through rocks if you really need to. Chopping fire wood. Obviously you need a fire and what's better than a really big fire in a survival situation, except when there is war or you are being chased my people. Climbing. A axe can also be used to help you climb, you might find it hard than with a normal climbing axe but if you need to make foot holes its easier to do it with axe than with something else. Bushcraft Anyone living in the bush must have a axe. Its just one of those things that you cant go without.

This is one of my favourite beaches in the world. Here you can see till Hermanus. Kleinmond has one of the strongest currents. It will take you right to Hermanus if you get stuck in it.

How to make smoke to signal someone in a airplane or helicopter.

September 9, 2008 by evl

If you are stuck in the wild you need to plan for ways to get out. One of the most frustrating things is when someone is stuck in the jungle is when they see a airplane or a helicopter but they cant signal for help. You should have a fire reader or at least a way to make a fire incase you hear oncoming airplanes or helicopters. The best place is on a hill or a place with no trees. If its in the middle of nowhere and there are usually no people they will notice smoke, but you have to get their attention. Here's how. Wet wood. That's it. Throw wet wood on a fire and it will smoke. Leaves also works. If you cant find any leaves or wet wood, use live plants and if you cant find a plant throw in your some of your clothes. But the answer is wet wood works the best to make smoke.

Mussels

September 9, 2008 by evl

I dont have a picture at the moment but I am sure you can find one my searching for mussels. Mussels is a great source of : Selenium, Vitamin b12 and Zinc as well as Folate. Mussels can be cooked in its shell on a open fire and is some of the best survival food if you are close to a beach or stranded on a island. Mussels are small but well worth the effort to get them. They are usually stuck on rocks and usually not that deep to get a few to eat. Mussels have been a great source of food for years and in France its eating with fries as here in South Africa we eat it usually with other sea food.

Hollow back survival knife, also known as Rambo knife.

September 9, 2008 by evl

To start off with my first post I'd thought I just start anywhere. Since I really have no idea where to begin. I bought a 1 liter Cast Ion Pot today. I will also blog about that a bit later. But for now, the Rambo survival knife. The Hollow back Rambo survival knife is not really survival knife, its more like a look good knife. Its not strong and the only use really for a knife like that is the contents inside. The reason I am so negative about those knives that has the hollow back and some gadgets in, is because they dont last.
