The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City.
From the blog "The lay of the land" to read more about what really happened . .. . .
40 years ago the Stonewall Riots, widely regarded as the beginning of ‘gay liberation’, took place in Greenwich Village, New York City. The riots were the first time that gay people had stood up against enforced oppression. Riots of bar frequented by gay people were commonplace. The story is a fascinating one, which I have summarised here.
“The Stonewall Inn catered to an assortment of patrons, but it was known to be popular with the most marginalized people in the gay community: transvestites, effeminate young men, hustlers, and homeless youth. Police raids on gay bars were routine in the 1960s, but officers quickly lost control of the situation at the Stonewall Inn, and attracted a crowd that was incited to riot. Tensions between New York City police and gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the next evening, and again several nights later.”
At 1.20am plain clothes and uniformed police officers raided the Stonewall Inn. About 200 people were in the Inn at that time. The raid did not go as planned. Standard procedure was to line up the patrons, check their identification, and have female police officers take customers dressed as women to the bathroom to verify their sex, upon which any men dressed as women would be arrested. Those dressed as women that night refused to go with the officers. Men in line began to refuse to produce their identification. The police decided to take everyone present to the police station but had to wait for transport. Those who were not arrested were released from the front door, but they did not leave quickly as usual. Instead, they stopped outside and a crowd began to grow and watch. Within minutes, between 100 and 150 people had congregated outside, some after they were released from inside the Stonewall, and some after noticing the police cars and the crowd. There were scuffles, arrests, pushing and violence (it was reported that the most feminine boys were the most badly beaten) with aggression from gay people who were reacting to arrest.
Fears that the global pandemic swine flu might start to mutate is in the air as the World health organisation reports that the death toll has doubled to 700. They also want countries to close schools to slow the virus down.
Experts also predict that the swine flu could shoot up in numbers when the most populated area in the world, the Northern Hemisphere starts autumn.
This is so beautiful. If you close your eyes it sounds like a band or orchestra playing but when you watch it is hard to believe that these people are all playing individually in different places around the world. And it's for a good cause too, they are 'playing for change' they make songs for piece and for change, obviously.
If you want to more info on what they are all about you can visit their site playingforchange.com

Seas Oasis (Oasis of the Seas) - the most anticipated cruise ship this year, which will overtake the ship class of Freedom, considered the largest in the world. This ship can take on board 6,300 passengers, which is 2000 more than the largest vessel to date. In addition, Oasis of Seas will be the largest number of rooms with balconies, the largest swimming pool on board and the first sea park with trees. A few days ago the bank of Zimbabwe or whoever said they might start using the dollar. I guess their pride came to them and the now might start using the Rand.
South African President Kgalema Motlanthe said on Sunday that neighbouring Zimbabwe, crippled by a record rise in inflation, could adopt the South African rand as its standard currency.

Look who's the loser now mad Bob. Begging for dollars because the currency of Zimbabwe is so useless people use that for toilet paper instead of just using real toilet paper which by the way is more expensive than 500 notes.

No, not really but he did admit that there is a problem with Cholera. What a load of crap that the entire world look at a entire nation die and not do anything. Waiting for the South African government to stop the crap in Zimbabwe. It's ridiculous.
Crazy bob actually admitted cholera is a "problem".
Mugabe last month had claimed in a nationally broadcast speech that there was no cholera in Zimbabwe, but Unicef boss Ann Veneman said on Saturday the 84-year-old leader now acknowledged the cholera situation which has already killed more than 2 200 people.
"He is acknowledging there is a problem. He recognises that cholera is a problem. He recognises there is a problem with the water and the sewer systems," she said in Johannesburg shortly after returning Zimbabwe.

Interesting that he had to wait for so many people to die before admitting the problem. Probably because his own house keepers have started dying off because they have no clean water to drink while the cray old 84 year old Mugabe lives in a marble palace.
