The Blog “user”, the one you dont want to have.

By blog user I dont mean just a user that’s using your blog, or maybe I mean exactly that. The blog “user” is someone who always uses other people to get what he wants. Now you might say everyone that reads blogs is a blog user. Yes but that is not what I am talking about. I am talking the person that will make friends with you and be sincere, they will link to your site but they have a goal they would like to achieve and they are using you just to get to that goal. Sincerity is necessary in blogging. Why are you friends with certain bloggers? Is it because you find their content really interesting or because you want to use them for something.

Personally I think befriending someone for the main purpose of using them is unethical as a blogger. The person you are using is a real person on the other side.

Here is how to spot a blog “user”

Always agree and not really make relevant comments

This type of blogger only wants their link in you comments, hoping for some traffic back. He never really makes relevant comments because he did not read the entire post, and actually does not know much about what you wrote

Always tells you how great your content is but would never bookmark or stumble it.

They always tell you how great your posts are but they dont take a few seconds to bookmark or stumble it, this is because they want your attention and they want you to see that they think your content is “great” because they want you as a reader for their blog. But if the content is really that great why cant you take the time to at least stumble it.

Barely links to your site

All my blogger friends link to my site or have some where, where I would be in their blogroll. Some type a link or just link to content now and then. But the blog “user” will never give you a link back.

Adds you on blogcatalog and mybloglog etc without ever visiting your site.

Why do you get 100’s of people adding you to their groups and friends if they are not really on your blog that often. I mean I get people adding me as their friend that I know has never been to my blog. This is a person that only wants your attention and comment work on their blogs and are not prepared to spend a second on your site

You get a idea they go with it, only to get traffic to their site

You get a great idea, you share it with your readers and before you know it this guy just goes for it with your idea. You though he was a reader but there he goes with your story or idea and take it as his own.

Always leaves you behind

The blog “user” is the type of blogger that when you have helped his blog grow he is off like you were a bad date or something. This type of blogger would use you to get to the next level and then forget you ever blogged as friends.

I know this must be a weird post. I am not talking about someone specific. I am just talking in general.

All bloggers would like to increase the traffic to their sites, but as you say, there is an ethical and unfortunately an unethical way of doing this. My motto is quite simple, you give me a nice story that I find interesting and I will give you something in return. Depending on the circumstances this could be in the form of a comment, a Stumble, a Digg or maybe just dropping an Entrecard (or any combination of these).

I have strong feelings about this. I feel that if you want to get higher in the rankings, take your friends with you. The ride is going to be shorter and a lot more enjoyable if you do it this way.

Many bloggers also tend to forget the golden rule. Do not worry about statistics, worry about content. If the content is great the statistics will follow.

    Nice thought provoking post.

Ja, esvl you got it right on the nail buddy! And let me be honest and not pretend that i am Mr. Goody Goody, i am also a human being and make mistakes just like any other:

I am guilty of point #4, adding people as friends on MBL and BlogCatalog without having to visit their sites. Especially my non-African friends. But now that you’ve brought this up, and say that it is unethical, which i now agree fully, i will go back to each and every one of them, visit their site and give them some true love.

And on the whole, as you know, that each site that i visit now, if i liked the content then i ensure i bookmark it. And just to re-itterate Arnold, Quality over Quantity is important.

I am glad that i have you guys to learn from for my blogging!!

Well done esvl, you are responsible for at least one ethical blogger. Slightly off topic, I see you have been doing a lot of work on your pages the last few days, it is looking good.
