One wonders with technology these days, what will happen next, what will the future hold for us as a civilization?

Well let’s think back for a moment, back to when Pong was the greatest source of entertainment for a computer junkie, a true adrenalin rush. Or how about the stiffy drive, to the computer geek it was like a symbol greatness, like a crown for a king.

If we look through human, and even animal nature we notice the true presence of a “Circle of Life”, “Survival of the Fittest” stronger animals eat the smaller weaker ones, the countries with the biggest/most weapons will usually win in a war and yet through all our attempts at peace, we may very well see a 3rd world war. So essentially we have almost come a full 3rd turn of our circle and apparently we have not learnt too much beyond bigger = better.

So what’s all this got to do with Computer you may ask? Well 1stly it pretty much rules our lives, and it appears that it is not far from completing it’s full circle.

We started with big chips, single processors, and games of a very monochrome nature, now we at hi definition 3D graphics, Advanced AI, Life like Physics and shadows that change with the light, some might say that the games are looking more real than reality, but how do we get this brilliance? Simple with high priced and high powered graphics cards, multi core processors and high speed motherboards.

The question is what is next? Well a lot of talk is going around about a 16 Core processor expected to be released by Intel and AMD both during or after 2010. This will then be bundled by a new motherboard architecture capable of handling the proposed 32nm cores they will be utilising in the 16 core processors, these motherboards will comprise of a FSB (Front Side Bus) replacement that is very similar to, and if not based on, the DDR Dual Channel transfer method with the ability to literally double up transfer speeds through the board allowing the CPU, Memory, Hard Drives and various other components to communicate on an exponential rate. With all this lightning speed being proposed, why for our games do we still need the Graphics Card. If you think about it, we will have board with “FSB’s” of probably no less than an effective 4000 – 6000 mHz so you would expect no less than a 6gHz processor to accompany that, with 16 cores you’re looking at an effective 96gHz worth of processing power, provided you have an application that can take full advantage of all 16 cores. Your DDR memory of at least 3gHz if not more.

I myself wonder why you would need a graphics card to play games after that, the technology is already on its way out that if running nVidia SLi or ATI Crossfire you will be able to separate the physics processing from the graphics processing between the cards, actually dedication each 1 to one of those task which would exponentially increase the quality of said game, this is high speed high quality physics and graphics were talking about, no longer the 25% – 50% overall performance boost from your second card.

So with the software to make 1 card perform 1 task and the other card perform another, the software to make an application utilise only 1 of your cores on your CPU, would it not be conceivable that we could make a hardware instruction to do the same thing for the gaming front in the not so far future. We have 16 cores possibly at 6gHz and memory at possibly 4gHz, will there be a graphics card out then to compete with that potential? Or will we complete out circle and return full control of everything to CPU? Write in a hardware instruction for 1 core to handle AI, another graphics, the 3rd one to handle physics and a 4th to handle the background calculations to sync them all together.

With 4gHz of power dedicated to each task, why not just go one step further, put 8 GB of RAM into the system and dedicate half of it to graphics processing as well, that gives and effective 16gHz of power behind the gaming task with 4GB of temporary storage, would it not then be conceivable that the life of the graphics card may come to a temporary halt?

Well only time will tell, till then let’s hope that The Matrix was simply one brilliant mans imagination and not a warning against giving a computer a brain! I say, if you going to give it a brain, make sure it’s only as big as the lift of your foot, so that if need be, you step on it or just simply drop kick it into never never land.
