10 things I hate about blog competitions »« Mbeki trying to save scorpions

What is a blog reader? It’s not what you think.

Many run competitions hoping to find some extra readers, but the fact is that while email subscription and rss digits go up do you gain any real readers?

A real reader is someone that is not part of your blog’s community for getting something out again and leaving They dont stay on your blog until they have reached a certain goal and move on. A real blog readers is someone that is there for the content and not for what the blog itself can do for them. The articles might teach them but the they are not there to gain from being part of the blog.

You might think this is stupid, but there is a reason i write this. Getting real readers is one of the keys for your rss reader count to consistently increase instead of going through phases of up and down. People that join your rss feed or subscribe by email for the sake of winning a competition will just as soon dissapear as fast as they came. Except if you can actually write quality content that will keep them. But the fact is most people just continue writing they way they do. So because that certain subscriber did not subscribe because of interest, his loyalty will soon fade away.

That is the reason you will have seasonal blogging buddies because you are both after a common goal, but as soon as one of you reach it you dont need the other blogger anymore. The difference between that and having a real subscriber is that the real subscriber is also not seasonal and is one of those that will help your blog grow.

People join blog communities for a number of reasons but the ones you want is the readers that want your content. Getting people to join that really not has interest in your articles is waisting your time but as I said you can convert them into loyal blog readers with hard work.

Think of it this way. You see a competition and you join without even reading the content. So for the next few weeks you get these posts in your Rss reader like Thunderbird that you actually dont have much interest in. So after a while you delete the rss feed because there was no real interest in the content. Now think about the blogger. He sees all of a sudden a drop in his rss readers. Why? Because you were not a real reader. You only really joined the blog to gain something else and thereby turning yourself into a fake reader if I can call it that.
